 I was asked about the Illinois Wolves 17U rating.  The Wolves started the season slowly but picked up their game in July and won the UAA tournament to finish their season in fine form.   Part of modeling 2000 teams is to do a double check on a few teams to make sure that the model is fair and working well.  I go back and look at a team's results and where they are rated.  Based on that analysis, I sometimes make adjustments.  I do this informally during the season as well, often weighting later season games more heavily than early-season games. So how did the Wolves match up with their competition?  Here's a summary of the games that were listed on The Circuit.   I looked at the spread or differential in the game result, the opponent's rating, the teams' game rating, and finally, the opponents final rank: The Wolves had a nice July, averaging a 142.8 rating vs. UAA opponents, however, early in the year, they had bad losses to three top ...

 What's in a Name?   Well, if you tried looking through the 2000 plus 17U boys basketball ratings that I posted HERE , you will probably say it was like picking a needle out of a haystack.  The "17U Boys Basketball Ratings by Team Name - Alphabetical listing of 2021 teams" is a much easier way to find your favorite Grassroots team. So who has the best team with a numerical name?  An "A" to "D" team, check HERE. For "E" to "M" teams, check HERE. For "L" to "S" teams, check HERE. For "T" to "XYZ" teams, check HERE. I am sure that many coaches and players agonize over what to call their team.  Some, sponsored by an NBA player, don't.  But a name can help you get recognition and interest from college coaches, especially if you and your team do well. Here are my final Grassroots 17U boys basketball ratings for the 2021 Summer Session.  I have spent a lot of time on the top 100, based upon the count on the right-hand side.  Ratings are based upon head-to-head and comparative scores, so the difference between the two teams is the rating difference.  In some cases, I have weighted game scores and in others, I have ignored blow-out games.   You can figure out your own rating by adding or subtracting the score differential for each opponent you played, ie. if you beat Bradley Beal by three you would add their rating of 148 plus three for a 151 game rating.   I am damn sure of my top 50 but it gets a little sketchy when I only have one or two or a handful of games for any particular team. but then again, you won't find nearly two thousand teams rated anywhere else.  So, while it ain't perfect, it's better than an opinion poll, in my mind.  It has been an interesting summer for boys grassroots basketball.  I wasn't so sure I wanted to tackle a national poll again but I jumped in and the EYBL Peach Jam was worth the effort.  I was able to predict 70% of the Peach Jam games with my "Sagarin" style mathematical model.  It helped that The Circuit was tracking a lot of League and Independent scores so that I did not have to track down individual tournaments. So consider this a final post of 17U Boys ratings.  I will start with the Circuit Leagues team averages and post links to each league and the Independents and my top 2000 17U teams.  I missed some teams in my modeling but there are only so many hours in the day and I ran out of time. The Circuits were all competitive but EYBL was, by far, the elite of the elite. UAA and 3SSB both came close but most leagues were a far cry from the excellence of EYBL.  There were a few teams in the other leagues that could hang with EYBL teams and a few EY...
